Two
of the greatest of the Greek heroes were Hercules and Atalanta,
and both have survived in their own identities, as well as being
the patterns for many other heroes of print, song, and screen.
But no hero has ever achieved the strength of the mighty
Hercules. Nor has any arrow ever flown as swift and true as one
shot from the bow of Atalanta! Monsters from the land, sea, and
moon face our heroes in these exciting pulp adventures!
This
volume contains stories by Doc Atlas creator, Michael A. Black,
paranormal author, Ralph Horner, and Tom Johnson, author of the

Hercules and the Moon Goddess
Hercules is a mortal man with god-like strengths and power.
He is the son of the God, Zeus, and the mortal woman, Alcmene.
He has been plagued by the curses that Zeus' wife Hera has put
on him thru the years. He lost his first family, now he has
another wife and children only to be taken by the Blue Moon
Goddess.
The beautiful moon goddess has many plans for the men she
captures; making it look as if a large monster captured them,
and they are never seen or heard from again. She finds herself
attracted to Hercules, and while she believes she is using him,
he is actually using her to escape.
The moon goddess uses her womanly ways in addition to her
monster-sized robots to kidnap men straight out of thin air to
gain ore for her planet. Hercules must find away to free himself
and the other soldiers, but can he do it in time to save their
lives?
This is a tale with a bit of mystery involved. It showed the
many sides and tribulations of Hercules. It also has very
interesting characters that make the story entertaining.
Spawns of the Titans
Hercules is always seeking out adventure and trying to right
wrongs, to defeat the forces of evil. He is able to do this
because even though he is a mortal he has the powers of the gods
from his father, Zeus.
Theseus and Ulysses want to be with Hercules when he leaves
on his latest adventure. Ulysses looks up to Hercules and wants
him to teach him the ways of fighting.
The barbarians give up a great fight to Hercules, his friends
and warriors. Hercules finds that he wants to free slaves on
what people believe to be an island of impending death.
This story is filled with pirates and adventures galore.
There are many battles showing the strengths and weaknesses of
many. Entertaining read.
The legends of Atalanta
Atalanta is the most ferocious woman warrior there ever was.
Abandoned by her parents, she was raised by a she-bear the gods
sent to keep her safe. She learned how to be one with the bear
and learned many ways to fight and survive.
Without knowing someone is observing her, Atalanta kills two
attacking centaurs by herself. She struck them both down with an
arrow released from her bow.
After fighting the attacking centaurs, she finds herself on
the hunt for a ferocious wild boar. She must fight to prove
herself among the men. But will she be able to conquer the
destructive forces at hand?
What strength and power you can find in this story with
jealousy among the men and major killings throughout. Short but
entertaining.
Atalanta and the Golden Lion
Atalanta, the well-known women warrior, finds herself in
another battle. Battling dragons, and the large, golden lion
from which she took the beautiful mane.
Tiberius the Lesser has seen firsthand how Atalanta the
warrior fights her enemies and the men who would challenge her.
He knows that many will write songs and stories about her
throughout history.
With new battles on the horizon, Atalanta and her fellow
warriors will have their hands full. There will be bloodshed and
consequences for a Atalanta that she could not foresee.
Exciting, and action packed, this seems like the story with
the most battles. You also get to see a side of Atalanta as told
by a fellow warrior.
Atalanta Alters the Tide of Alida
Atalanta is spending time at the home of her parents when
Rassesi comes to her looking for help in defeating a dark force
in the underwater, Alida. Longing for another adventure, she
readily accepts.
Rassessi had a dream of a man needing help, so he goes to
Zeus to find out if it was real. He learns the dream is real and
that he can take two others with him to defeat the underworld
god.
The three warriors descend into the fight of their lives.
Some will live and some will die but can they accomplish their
task of defeating the god and releasing Alida from the curse
they have been under?
More battles and action with a bit of treachery in this
story. Wonderful visions of the gods and monsters. Enjoyable.
Each one of these short stories tells a tale of a different
battle between the mortals and gods; between good and evil.
These authors do a good job of combining them all in one place
for the enjoyment of the reader. Although I am not a fan of
Greek Mythology, I did enjoy the stories told in Heroes of
Ancient Greece.

Jimmy Malone is an old fashioned super hero. He secretly
works alongside the police as The Black Ghost. As long as people
do not learn who he really is, especially the police who he aims
to help. Using his anonymity, he can bend and break the rules
that bind the local law enforcement.
Penny Malone married Jimmy knowing his alternate identity.
Being the only person who does results in her often helping
Jimmy in his crime fighting adventures. She has also been known
to not only provide an alibi for Jimmy but to dress up as The
Black Ghost to help keep Jimmy’s secret safe.
This is a collection of stories depicting a number of The
Black Ghost’s adventures. Jimmy has been trained in a number of
Martial arts and fighting methods. He is also more than
competent with his favored guns. Jimmy’s step-father is in
charge of the detective department of the local police. This is
where The Black Ghost finds most of the crimes he fights.
Although his father suspects Jimmy’s involvement with the masked
man, he has never been able to prove it.
Reading this book has been an education for me. Mr. Johnson
describes his work as a ‘Pulp Thriller’. This is a genre I had
never heard of let alone read, but from the introduction
forward, I was hooked. These stories are strong and exciting, as
are the characters. Jimmy has a strong sense of justice and a
compelling need to protect those he deems innocent. Penny is
Jimmy’s wife and the stable part of his life. It takes a great
strength of character to be able to support a man with such an
unusual hobby. Mr. Johnson has written an enlightening book and
I will definitely be interested in reading more about his unique
hero.

REVIEW BY LYN
McCONCHIE:
I've always liked Rod's work so I was happy to
hearthat he had a second short story collection appearing in
America. (Previous work was 20th Century Dart.)
This is a solid little collection of 20 stories. In my
opinion, a couple of the tales are a little weak but overall
there's a good feel to the work as you read. The stories
flow from one to the other, and the themes are consistent,
with a univying character to hold them together well.
Rod tends to write horror, but his tales are usually more than
mere spatter, his work often looks at themes and trends in
society. His story "Five O'Clock" I found deeply touching,
it's a story about family and what they can mean, and how bereft
of desperately needed support you can be when they are gone.
"The Big Aunty Curse" is a wicked little tale about the evils
of reality television and I snickered through most of it.
Who hasn't thought that just once it would be pleasant to see
those smarmy presenters on similar shows get their comeuppance?
Well, in this story one does 0 a nice piece of wish-fulfillment.
A longer story, "The Trials and Tribulations of Kara" is a
tale of revenge - of a sort. And of a mad scientist, a
Gypsy woman with troubles of her own, and a very interesting
plane flight - with optional entertainment. The outcome
strongly reminds me of the saying about "allowing sleeping
dogs to lie," and in this case Victor - descendant of the
scientist - and his assistants should have listened.
"Killing the Jocks" is a clever tale about Peter. It
says that you may be able to take a boy out of Nerdland but
it's far more difficult to take Nerdland out of the boy.
I chuckled over the last couple of sentences, there's a fine
razor-edge of irony there that shows the author is capable of
seeing both sides of his theme.
(This story may be something
of a forerunner to Rod's newest work - DISCO EVIL, DEAD MAN'S
STAND - a full-length book, not a collection, which I've been
privileged to read in first draft recently, and which I
thought a maturing of his writing abilities. The theme,
both of this story and of Disco Evil, is likely to be
controversial in some quarters, but I found them strong and
readable works.)
All in all, this is a good collection.
Night To Dawn Books have done a nice job on the cover art too.
The volume is staying in my own library to be reread somewhere
down the track, and I can't say fairer than that.
COMING SOON:
More novels from Tom Johnson and other
authors...stay tuned!
Colonel Evelyn Peterson is ready for the commission of a
lifetime. Her career is a testament to years of hard work and
dedication, and the trip to Mars is just one more feather in
her cap. She will be among the first to build a living
community on an alien planet.
Major Adam Cooper is second in command to the Colonel. His
respect and admiration for her is absolute, and if he drives
her a little nuts, it just keeps her on her toes. He would
give his life for his crew mates, and there is no question in
his mind that the Colonel would do the same.
Colonel Peterson and her crew set off on an adventure like no
other. They are to set up a bio-dome on Mars, and start a
terra forming project. However the mission quickly becomes one
of survival on a planet so alien that it barely resembles
Earth. The ship and its crew are swept back in time to the
Permian Period of the Paleozoic Era; which is approximately
250 million years in the past. Colonel Peterson and Major
Cooper along with their five crew mates fight for their lives
against a primordial planet and its inhabitants. Humans may be
the highest on the evolutionary ladder, but nature has a way
of evening out the playing field. Does the crew have any hope
of survival? Or will they become just another species to fall
victim to the great extinction?
This story has such a fascinating concept, I was enthralled
from the very beginning. If you are at all interested in
prehistoric Earth, this is a fantastic fictional read. Mr.
Johnson gives life to prehistoric Earth with amazing detail.
His descriptions of plant and animal life, as well as the
geographical layout makes the story come to life for the
reader. From the scorching desert to the steaming swamps each
page is loaded with an eye for detail. The characters are also
fully developed, and have a great diversity of personality. I
fully enjoyed this story, and hope that Mr. Johnson has many
more to come.
